ETHS Football Romps Over Maine West
Evanston running back Dwight Boney (35) carries the ball in the second half last Saturday against Maine West. Boney and other reserves played most of the third and fourth quarters of the WildKits' 39-6 victory.
The Evanston Township High School football team defeated Maine West 39-6 two Saturdays ago in a CSL crossover game. The win moved Evanston's record to 2-1 on the year and gave the WildKits their first home victory, while the Warriors fell to 0-3 with the loss.
The WildKits' first offensive possession gave no indication of how productive they would be on that side of the football. The drive was marred by three penalties and ended with an interception thrown by quarterback Ryan Roveda. From there, however, it was all WildKits.
Evanston started their second possession on their own 48 following a 32-yard punt return by Deon Thompson. Running back Michael Bolden rushed for 39 yards and fullback Kendale Farlow followed with a 15-yard touchdown run to put the hosts up 6-0.
Evanston's next drive began at their own 44 and lasted one play, as Bolden ran 56 yards to the end zone for the first of his three touchdowns.
Bolden's second touchdown, a five-yard run, came six plays after West quarterback Sean Willett's fumble was recovered by the Kits at the Warrior 41. Bolden finished his scoring binge with a two-yard run just before halftime. He keyed that scoring drive with a 42-yard pass reception from Roveda.
"There's not much more to say about Michael Bolden other than what you see is what you get," WildKit coach Tony Johnson said after the game. "He can make people miss and has a gear he can shift to that most guys don't have. He's a special player."
Bolden also made an impact on defense, knocking Willett out of the game with a big hit early in the third quarter. Adding insult to injury for the Warriors, Thompson returned the ensuing punt for a touchdown, giving Evanston a 32-0 lead.
With a seemingly insurmountable lead at that point, Coach Johnson decided to play his reserves for the remainder of the game. But the subs picked up where the starters left off. Seeing his first action of the game, backup running back Michael Schanette scored from 14 yards out with 4:42 left in the third quarter, and Sam Alden added the extra point to give the Kits their final point total.
Evanston's defense gave the Warriors little room to operate for most of the game, shutting them out until Jon Cruz broke off an 84-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, although West was unable to convert the two-point conversion.
Johnson said he was not surprised by the convincing nature of his
team's victory.
"We knew if we did things right, we would be able to win," the coach
explained. "I thought we executed well today."
The WildKits played Sept. 15 at Deerfield. Johnson said he expects "a much more physical game" against the Warriors. Until then, Johnson and his team will try to ride the momentum they have built.
"We made some good strides in Week Two [against Lane Tech]," said the coach, "and we'll take a look at the film and learn from this game as well."

Girls Swimming Beats Lake Forest, Falls to Barrington
The ETHS girls swim team hosted dual meets against two teams ranked in the top 5 in the state. The girls defeated Lake Forest 101-82 two Fridays ago, before falling to Barrington 118-68 the following afternoon. These two meets followed a season-opener against Loyola, also a Top 5 team.
Head coach Kevin Auger explained that the WildKits' depth helped them match up favorably against their highly regarded opponents.
"We have a lot of good swimmers, but we don't have any superstars," Auger said. "So we're winning by our masses [scoring a lot of points], which is why we're such a good dual-meet team.
"But during the sectional and state meets, only the top 12 scores get your team any points," he continued, "so [the early-season success] hasn't changed my expectations for the team [in the sectional and state competitions]."
Against Lake Forest, the girls scored eight points each with wins in the 200 medley and 400-free relays. Grace Borchers won the 200 individual medley and the 100 back, Anne Frigo won the 50- and 100-yard free, and Becca Thompson came in first in the 500-yard free. The girls also got second- place finishes from senior Jenny Kruse in the 50-yard free and junior McKenna Kulman in the 100 yard-free.
"I think we were more tired this time than we were for the Loyola meet," Auger said after beating Lake Forest. "But I was very impressed with how the girls got their emotions up for this meet. But Barrington will be a tough matchup for us. They have a lot of depth like we do, but their depth is of a little higher quality."
Those words seemed prophetic the following afternoon, when Barrington beat up on the WildKits. The only Evanston swimmer who finished first was freshman Jane Munro in the 100-yard back. However, the Lake Forest and Barrington contests should somewhat simulate the state meet for the team, with two days in a row of swimming against high-level competition. Several individuals' times were slower than they had been against Lake Forest, and Auger believed the victory on Friday night took a lot out of his swimmers.
"I think we were a little tired after Friday night's meet," the coach
said. "But we'll have to do better as the weeks go on."

Boys Cross-Country Shows Well at First Meet
The Evanston Boys Cross Country team fought through rainy and muddy conditions to defeat Maine South 27-29 in their first Central Suburban League South meet of the season last Tuesday. It was an important win for a young and growing team. "Our guys beat a team that coming in here was better than they were," said Coach David Phillips.
Evanston's varsity team was led by two juniors, Matt D'Arcy and Sam Levon, who overtook Maine South's leader in the third and final mile to finish 1-2. D'Arcy won the race in 17 minutes flat, while Levon followed in 17:07. Scott Shepard (17:14), Matt Marol (17:37), and Lars Kohlmen (18:19) rounded out the scoring for the victors, finishing 5th, 8th and 11th respectively.
The times were respectable, therefore, given the mud and the ETHS runners' "tired legs." Coach Phillips has been training his team hard, in an attempt to make a splash later in the season. Phillips likes the way his team is progressing so far. "We haven't had a step backward yet. We've been real consistent. I'm real excited about it," he said.
More reason for encouragement comes from the youth of this year's team, which will lose nobody to graduation, and will likely be an even greater force next year. Three freshmen are also coming up the ranks, and showed their potential in the 2-mile race. Brian Bastian and Ben Lev ran 1-2 in 12:22 and 12:23, respectively, and Colin White finished 5th in 12:49.
