NU to get some Sun in El Paso

The Northwestern Wildcats will face the UCLA Bruins in the 72nd annual Vitalis Sun Bowl, held on Dec. 30 in El Paso, Texas. The game will be televised on CBS.

This year's Sun Bowl, the second-oldest bowl in the country, is expected to be a high-scoring offensive battle, with the Wildcats (7-4) and Bruins (9-2) both entering the game among the nation's top offensive and worst defensive teams.

The two teams have met five previous times, with NU leading the overall series 3-2.

NU's appearance in the Sun Bowl will be the school's sixth post-season bowl appearance, with five of the six coming in the last decade.

More girls tried out for gymnastics this year at Evanston Township High School than ever before. Head coach Chester Jones does not know why.

Forty-five girls tried out for the gymnastics team this season, the highest number Mr. Jones said he had seen in his 14 years as coach at ETHS. Unfortunately, because of the high level of interest, he was forced to make some cuts.

"It's the first time in about nine years that we've had to cut," he said. "I'd only made three cuts since I've been here, and in the last ten days, I've probably cut 12 girls."

Among the varsity, junior varsity and frosh/soph levels, the program currently has 35 girls, but because of the numbers, the coach said he would probably have to make a few more cuts over the next couple of weeks.

"I'm sure we cut girls that could have helped us a lot in the long run," Jones said.

"It's just impractical for us to handle that many girls and keep everyone in a safe frame of mind," he said. The gym has a capacity of 30 people, and according to Jones, when that number is exceeded, the risk of girls running into each other increases significantly.

At the varsity level, Jones has rotated between five and six team members.

At each level, Jones chooses four gymnasts to compete in each of the sports' four events: vault, bars, beam and floor. Girls can compete in multiple events, and many of Jones' team members have done so.

"When we put our lineups together, we put girls out there who can do what we need done for that particular event," he said."

So far the varsity team is 2-0 with victories coming against Maine West and at the Niles West Invite. So far the varsity team is 2-1 with victories coming against Maine West and at the Niles West Invite. The team placed seventh in the Glenbrook North Invite Saturday, and was not 100 percent, according to Jones, because of injuries.

The team is led by senior Cara Hageman and sisters Emma and Naomi Katz, both juniors, all of whom compete in each of the four individual events.
"If anyone's going to make or break our team, it's going to be one of those three," Jones said.
