Room for a View: Pieces of a Mind
By Charles Wilkinson

• Will the United Nations ever become Nations United?  If ever our world needed voices united - and action - against the obscenity of violence, the abduction of innocent girls in Nigeria cries out for both. Expecting the United States to step in to “help” just feeds the lame myth that America is the global police force which, in effect, seems to neutralize, if not neuter, the UN.

•There is fresh air caressing the Vatican these days since the arrival of Pope Francis. It just doesn’t seem to be stirring the dusts of  its entrenched, unenlightened past. How can the Church continue its search for and be open to the truth when stating that it already has it?

• Looking for “the Union label” on college scholarship athletes seems both unnecessary and ridiculous. Mr. Colter has cast a spotlight on some real problems, but claiming that scholarship athletes are employees of their Alma Mater goes much too far. Should colleges simply hire athletes to play under the banner of the institution while offering them the option to enroll academically (at their own expense) to feed their minds while conditioning their bodies to “win one for the skipper” while filling their employer’s coffers?

• Road rage, I believe, is about much more than just what happens while driving. What’s going on in a motorist’s life is also there behind the wheel; and it finds a “blow hole” because of the way someone else is driving. Besides not drinking and putting on seat belts, drivers should check out  their emotional state when sliding into the driver’s seat.

• Music - music - music.  Where have all the singable songs gone? Not the oldies that hum through history, but anything on the list of today’s “hits” that doesn’t require screaming. And noise - noise - noise.

• Global warming; fact or fiction? Does it matter? What is happening in our atmosphere demands global - that’s GLOBAL - attention...and response. If Mother Nature isn’t shouting loud enough these days, what is it going to take to raise a universal level of consciousness about the need to change our ways and take much better care of where we are living?

• What is it any suicide bomber hopes to accomplish? Thus far, they manage to kill innocent others along with themselves, but nothing changes. All they seem to achieve is a headline or two which quickly become yesterday’s news (except for those who lose loved ones) Others may choose to do likewise, but with similar results. Self immolation would be at least as effective – with no innocents involved.

• Finally, could there ever be any worse label in a  democratic/capitalist society than “trickle down economics?” Well, it at least destroys any myth of a possibility for a so-called “level playing field.”
