ETHS Girls Lacrosse Team Expects a Strong Finish
By Brian Cleary

The Evanston Township High School girls’ lacrosse team has had its share of ups and downs so far this season, but the Wildkits are confident they can finish the season on a positive note, especially if they can play the way they did at the start of the season. The Kits won their first four games and five of their first seven heading into a matchup with Vernon Hills.

On April 11, the Kits beat Vernon Hills, 16-7. In that game, the Kits led 9-2 at halftime. To open the second half, Vernon Hills scored first to make the score 9-3, but that is the closest the visitors got, as the Kits prevailed. Leading the way for the Kits was midfielder Maggie Krause, who scored six goals.

"Maggie was named Comcast Sports Net Athlete of the Week last week," said Head Coach Sarah McKenna. The senior has scored 27 goals and three assists so far this season. "She is the first-ever Evanston athlete and also the first Evanston boys or girls lacrosse player to win the award, so that was exciting."

Other leading scorers in that game were Nina Doeff and Mary Loftus, who each scored three goals, and Rachel Kornbluh, who added two goals. In addition, Michelle Foster and Beth Parcell chipped in a goal apiece and goalie Maddy McNear made nine saves. With the victory, the Kits improved to 6-2 overall.

From there, the Kits took on Lake Zurich on April 13 and lost 9-2. After the defeat the Kits looked to get back on the winning track against Maine South on April 15, but fell to the Hawks 8-7. With that defeat, the Kits have lost two in a row and their record fell to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in Central Suburban League Conference play. The Kits were scheduled to play Lane Tech on April 17 in an attempt to get back in the win column, but that game was rained out.

Even with her team on a two-game losing skid, Coach McKenna said she is proud of how her team is playing so far this season. "We are really pleased with how our season is going. We started the season 4-0, which has not been done since 2005, so we are really excited about that," said the coach. "We are also really excited about the way our seniors and our captains have worked to make everyone come together and how everyone is playing together and as a team."

In order for the Kits to finish the season the way they started – winning six of the first eight games – Coach McKenna feels the key is for the team to continue to work hard and play together. "We have a lot of young, athletic players, so [we need to] just continue to work hard on the little things, continue to play solid defense and continue to work together," said the coach. "We are looking to see everyone attack and [play] balanced and just to continue to do what we have been doing."

The Kits were scheduled to play CSL Conference foe Glenbrook South on April 24, then Regina Dominican the next day. That game is followed by a matchup with Mather on May 1. Regarding the Glenbrook South matchup, Coach McKenna said, "It should be a good game. ... As a conference game, it is one of the ones you look forward to and we are excited to see what the girls can do."

The Coach is also excited about two of her seniors who have made decisions on where they will attend college in the fall. Senior and team captain Shannon Smith has committed to Augustana and senior midfielder Dede Smith has committed to Lake Erie. McKenna expects her remaining seniors to make their decisions in the next couple of weeks.
