Rotary's Polio Torch Stops in Evanston
 Just before twilight on April 14, Rotary International held a ceremonial lighting of the Rotary Flame at the international headquarters, 1560 Sherman Ave. The flame was lighted to celebrate the decades-long battle and ultimate victory over polio in India and shine a light on what is needed to eradicate the paralyzing disease worldwide.

Evanston Designated Tree City USA for 31st Consecutive Year
The City of Evanston has been named a 2014 Tree City USA community by the Arbor  Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Paul D’Agostino, assistant director of Public Works/Forestry said, “This is the 31st consecutive year that Evanston has been designated a Tree City USA.  We’re still in the top 10 cities in the state for being a Tree City.”

Midwest Premiere of Sarah Ruhl Musical 'Melancholy Play' at Piven
Piven Theatre Workshop presents the midwest premiere of “Melancholy Play: A Chamber Musical” by playwright Sarah Ruhl, with a new musical score by composer Todd Almond. The play, directed by Polly Noonan, will run April 30 through June 7 at Piven Theatre Workshop, 927 Noyes St.

'Furious 7'
“Furious 7” is a mishmash of different ideas done in typical “Fast and Furious” fashion, filled with dashed-off story arcs, bland acting and cliché-filled plots, with sprinkles of mediocre action scenes served at a fast pace. For lack of a better word, the movie makes me furious to the seventh power. So I guess the title lives up to its promise.

American Legion Pasta Benefit Sends Vets to National Wheelchair Games

Spring Cleaning: Bulk Trash Pick-ups
Twice per year the City of Evanston’s Streets and Sanitation Division offers residents the free removal of up to six cubic yards of bulk garbage. Spring 2015 bulk trash pick-ups will take place on Fridays, April 17 through May 8, and are scheduled according to residents’ normal refuse pick-up day.

Free Oral Cancer Screening Set for April 12
Anyone who smokes, uses chewing tobacco, drinks alcohol or has risk factors for oral HPV infection is invited to make an appointment for a free oral cancer screening at NorthShore Evanston Hospital Kellogg Cancer Center, 2850 Ridge Ave. between 9 and 11 a.m. on April 12.  Screenings are available by appointment only.  Registration for an oral cancer screening is available online at northshore.org/cancer or by calling 847-570-5020.
