Daylily Alvarez, Latino outreach coordinator, received a Heart of the Moon (Yolotlmetzli) Public Service Award in July for her service to the Latino immigrant community.

The award was given by the Binational Institute of Human Development and Casa Mexico-USA with the Latina Art League Chicago. The awards celebrate women’s efforts for the welfare and advancement of the Latino community.

Ms. Alvarez said the award inspires her to keep working hard and to be a role model as she creates bridges between the Spanish-speaking communities and those who speak other languages.

She brings many programs to the Library to meet the needs of Spanish speakers, such as citizenship classes, Hispanic cultural activities and films.

Over the past eight months she has steadily added new books to the Library’s collection of books in Spanish, welcoming requests from Spanish-speakers for books and programs as she meets them in the Library or through her work out in the community, including at the Robert Crown Community Center where she maintains a regular presence.

In the fall, she will introduce “Hecho in the USA,” a year-long series of programs about the Latino experience in the United States.

Ms. Alvarez is joined in her work with Spanish-speakers at the Library by Spanish-speaking assistant librarian Isabel Carrera, who was born and raised in Mexico.

Ms. Carrera is a biologist and taxonomist educated in universities in both Mexico and in the United States. She recognized a need for Spanish-speaking and bilingual children to have hands-on science programming with Latino scientists.

For the past two years, the Library has offered Jugando con la Ciencia/Playing with Science, alternate Saturday afternoons from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Main Library’s Children’s department.
