ESO Presents 'School For Scandal'

The Evanston Symphony Orchestra will perform the overture to ‘The School for Scandal’ by the 20th-century American composer Samuel Barber at its May 4 concert. It was Barber’s first work for orchestra and was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1933. That same year, he won the Joseph H. Bearns Prize from Columbia University for his overture to ‘The School for Scandal.’ The work helped bring Barber national attention and eventually became part of the standard orchestra repertoire.
The Evanston Symphony will also perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E Flat, “Eroica,” and Bruch’s Violin Concert No. 1 in G Minor with Chicago’s virtuoso violinist Sang Mee Lee. The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. on May 4 in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall on the Northwestern campus. Tickets and other information are available at or by calling 847-864-8804.
