For a Weekend, the World Was a Stage

The 28th annual Ethnic Arts Festival took place on July 20 and 21 at Dawes Park, Church Street at the lakefront.

One hundred vendors offered jewelry, sculptures, clothing, wood crafts and musical instruments representing cultures from around the globe. Art activities for children included origami, face painting, papel picado, Moroccan clay drums, maraca-making, tie-dye, Mehndi, and Lithuanian folk motifs.

White tents sheltered crafts from many countries and cultures; international cuisine along the park’s edge welcomed patrons with a taste or a meal. Musical entertainment represented the Pacific Islands, Africa, Ireland, Mexico, Korea and Evanston (S.O.U.L. Creations.

The festival officially opened with the Parade of Nations, in which volunteers placed around the lagoon 190 flags, representing, said host Bill Campbell, “the 190 countries in this community we call Planet Earth.”
