On June 25, the McGaw YMCA Children’s Center honored retiring board members, presented volunteer and leadership awards and inducted new board members.

Incoming Board Chair Dan Israelite recognized retiring Board Chair Kirk Hoopingarner and presented him with a commemorative chair in recognition of his service. Other retiring board members are Elena Garcia Ansani, Betsi Burns, Louis English, Michelle Rogers and Eric Witherspoon.

New board members are Manuel Alemán, bilingual parent liaison at D65; Percy Berger, chairman-elect of NorthShore University Health System/Evanston Hospital; Churchill Daniels, principal of Oakton Elementary School; Chala Holland, newly appointed assistant principal for instruction at Oak Park and River Forest High School; Gilo Kwesi Moussa Logan, adjunct professor of African and African-American Studies at Northeastern Illinois University and founder of S.O.U.L. creations; and Dr. Sharon Robinson, pediatrician at NorthShore University Health System and member of the Pioneering Healthier Communities Board.

To a standing ovation, Rose Johnson received the Alice Kreimen Award for Board Leadership, presented by Robert Reece, former McGaw YMCA board chair and community leader. Volunteer awards were presented to David Spacek, Sidney Caselberry, Bill Tramel, Mia Sherin, Tammy Bozza and Catherine Rocca.

To close the meeting, Mr. Israelite, looked to the future of the McGaw YMCA. “We have an opportunity to show the community how we can work together to solve some of our most challenging problems. … The future of the YMCA looks a lot like what’s in the room tonight. You see a mix of people of all ages, all backgrounds, all skills and abilities, who are going to help build the future of our community.”
