Longtime Evanstonian Daniel Rosenfeld recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Social Work’s Illinois Chapter. The National Association of Social Workers is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world. The NASW Illinois Chapter is one of the association’s largest chapters with over 7,000 members in Illinois alone

A graduate of  the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service and the Institute for Psychoanalysis’ Child Therapy Program, Mr. Rosenfeld began his career in the 1960s at the Young Men’s Jewish Council Youth Center and the Jewish Children’s Bureau of Chicago.

He taught for several decades at both the Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Institute for Clinical Social Work, where he was one of the first faculty members of the school. He was a very active member of the Illinois Society for Clinical Social Work and served as Chairperson of the Illinois Social Work Examination and Disciplinary Board of the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Until recently, Mr. Rosenfeld also maintained a private practice of psychotherapy in Evanston and assisted individuals and families in overcoming and managing a wide range of problems and challenges.

During the awards presentation sections of the many award nomination letters were read, including the following:

“As a clinical consultant, Dan has helped countless students with some of the hardest agency cases that come their way. … Dan willingly took on this often difficult task of training students in challenging clinical settings. ... Dan has consistently been the Institute for Clinical Social Work’s expert on all issues related to ethics.”

Former students of Mr. Rosenfeld said they found his assistance invaluable as they struggled to learn the psychodynamic approach to treatment. As an example, one said, “Not all consultants feel able to translate the principles to the child welfare or school settings, but Dan does so in his calm, good-humored, sound manner.”

Mr. Rosenfeld was honored for his “unselfish and total dedication for 50 years in many capacities that honor the field of social work. He is a widely respected and valued member of both the social work profession and the City of Evanston.”

Dear Dan:I want to make sure you know how helpful and impactful was your therapy with me "back in the day". I think your warm and intentional "That makes sense to me" was the huge turning point for me in claiming for the first time my healthy entitlement and belief in my inner information as oh-so-key. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart an soul. And, I'm doing so damn well!!
