Poem in Your Pocket Day Hits Evanston Neighborhoods
By Judy Chiss

For people who like poetry, Poem in Your Pocket Day is a way to move poetry out of the closet and into classrooms, offices, libraries, and virtually anywhere else where people gather, congregate, and rub shoulders.

April 27 will be the ninth year of this national celebration since its launch date of 2008 by the Academy of American Poets.

The Evanston RoundTable and the Evanston Public Library – two entities that like bringing people together and encouraging dialogue – are partnering to bring out the inner-poet in us all. During the day on Thursday, April 27 teams of volunteers will be outside of Evanston’s three libraries – the Main Library on Orrington Avenue and Church Street in downtown, North Branch Library at 2026 Central St., and Chicago Avenue/Main Street Branch at 900 Chicago Ave. –  handing out prettily wrapped poems to read and share.

The poems are some of the 2017 prizewinners of the annual JoAnne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards that will be announced at 2 p.m. on April 23 in the Community Meeting Room of the Main Library.

On Poem in Your Pocket Day around the country, people are being encouraged to carry, read and share favorite poems with others in appreciation of poetry – and in an expression of goodwill.

The Evanston RoundTable’s staff, having caught the spirit of the bard, will be attaching personally-written haikus (3-line, 17 syllable poems utilizing lines with 5, 7, and then 5 syllables) to the wrappings of the poems being distributed on April 27.

The RoundTable invites readers to write their own haiku poems and send them to the RoundTable for the personal enjoyment of the staff – as well as for the possibility of being one of three grand winners of the RoundOne Haiku Competition. The three haiku poems deemed the best will win a double scoop ice cream cone from their favorite Evanston ice cream establishment.

Those interested should mail (snail mail) their haiku entries (name, address, and phone number required on an attached sheet) to Evanston RoundTable RoundOne Haiku Contest, 1124 Florence Ave., Suite 3, Evanston, IL 60202
