In February, Sergio Hernandez Jr. was appointed Chairman of the Latino Engagement & Action Council by Latino Resources’ board of directors. “My family and I moved to Evanston for several reasons. We are helping to take care of our parents and at the same time providing our sons Matias, Emiliano and Khalil with the best educational experience they can get at Dawes School.”

A lifelong Cubs fan, Mr. Hernandez was born in the Pilsen community of Chicago, but raised on the north side in Wrigleyville. Mr. Hernandez has been a bilingual educator for 11 years. He recently completed an Illinois Early Childhood Fellowship with Voices for Illinois Children and is currently working for the Illinois State Board of Education as a consultant. “I am moving in a new direction with my career and would like to positively impact education with my expertise as a policy advocate.”

“My new leadership role will provide an opportunity for me to engage the Latino community, parents, teachers and students. The Latino Summit was the first step for bringing Latinos and non-Latinos together to begin the work of creating a network that effectively delivers information to all members of our Latino community. We have to put our problems on the table and find solutions to solve them. This way we will elevate the voice of the Latino community. That is the work we are trying to do, make sure Latinos are heard. The Latino Engagement & Action Council will be the framework we use to make this happen. Increasing Latino participation is our goal.”

RoundTable, it is important that I express gratitude and encourage you to continue bi-lingual articles like that of Emmanuel Patino Gomez on March 24, 2016. Please continue articles in both Spanish and in English.
Our country could be as proud as many nations where citizens speak more than one language.
Thank you for publishing in both languages.
Sincerely,
Virginia
