Mariachi groups often sing “Ranchero”-style songs, Mexican Country folk songs about love, nature and patriotism that date back to the Mexican Revolution. Evanston’s local mariachi singer, Arnulfo Cárdenas, a self-taught singer, began singing when he was a very young child as a choir member at his church in Huapango, Guanajuato, Mexico. “I did not have formal singing or guitar lessons growing up in Mexico,” he said.

Mr. Cárdenas has lived in Evanston for more than 20 years. “I lived in Chicago when I first arrived here in 1980. I returned to Mexico in 1992 to marry my wife, Hermila Cárdenas, and we moved to Evanston to be near her relatives and start our own family,” he said. Both parents are actively involved in their five children’s education and were participants of District 65’s Bilingual Parents Leadership Institute.

He said, “I participated in a mariachi festival when I was single at the age of 22 and have been singing mariachi ever since.” As a solo mariachi singer, he performs regularly at parties, events and family gatherings. “My favorite mariachi singer is José Alfredo Jiménez,” he said. “I sing classic ranchero mariachi songs, like Vicente Fernández’s ‘Volver Volver,’ ‘Mexico Lindo y Querido’ and my favorite, ‘Camino de Guanajuato.’ I hope young people will keep singing mariachi music so it is not forgotten.”

Mariachi Cárdenas can be reached at 773-940-5929 or arnulfo.cardenas@yahoo.com.
