Welcome, Mr. Murillo
An emerging Latino leader, Oscar Murillo Jr. from San Jose, Cal., joined the City of Evanston’s managerial team in July as the first Latino to be selected as a Local Government Management Fellow. He said, “I applied for 15 internships last year. I received an invitation from two municipalities. One was in California and the other in Evanston. I really wanted an opportunity to work in a City’s Manager’s office in another state. I made the right choice.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in literature at University of California Santa Barbara, Mr. Murillo became TOEFL (Test of  English as a Foreign Language) certified and moved to Santiago, Chile, to work as a teacher for one year. “I was a little
naïve when I decided to do this, but my adventurous side wanted a new experience. It helped me to decide what I wanted to do next with my life,” he said.

Mr. Murillo considered law school as a pathway but chose to pursue his passion for public service through a master’s program in public administration. “I am very fortunate to have had mentors and good teachers who have helped me get to where I am today. My parents were my best teachers, and it really makes a difference when you have that kind of help.”

Mr. Murillo is working with the City Manager’s team of senior leaders, aldermen, various committee members and other staff. His email is omurillo@cityof
evanston.org.

Bienvenido, Sr. Murillo
