Award for Teacher Excellence
Emma Ortiz, a bilingual/multicultural education specialist at Evanston School District 65’s Nichols Middle School, was presented the Latino Leadership Award for Teacher Excellence by Latino Resources at their recent celebration. Mrs. Ortiz is a native of Mexico City and has lived in Chicago since the age of 5. “I taught an art class after high school and knew I would be a teacher for the rest of my life,” she shared. A teacher since 2001, Emma has also taught for Chicago Public Schools as well as in Phoenix, Arizona.

“I always wish I had more time to work with my English language learners. They typically require three years to become proficient bilingually. When they are in a mainstream classroom, it can be a challenge for them. I must communicate and work collaboratively with their parents and teachers to ensure they become successful students.”

Mrs. Ortiz is a leader inside and outside of the classroom and has earned two masters degree. She is a role model for all her students and has inspired many Latino children to embrace education. “You cannot advance without education. It is something no one can ever take away from you,” she said. Emma Ortiz is a mother of two young children, wife, and dedicated daughter who shares her love of learning selflessly. “I want to positively impact the lives of all my students. That is why I became a teacher, to make a difference in the lives of others.”
