Latina Participation
Angelica Solano is a Latina Evanstonian working to achieve her dreams by earning a college degree. Ms. Solano was born and raised in Evanston. She graduated from ETHS and attends Oakton Community College. Angelica hopes to be the first college graduate in her family.

Ms. Solano shared she was uncertain about what she would do after high school. During her senior year, she became a volunteer for Latino Resources. With their help she developed a plan for attending college. The 2013 U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Social and Economic Supplement report highlighted a significant educational attainment growth for Latinos to have increased over the last ten years. Between 2004 and 2013, the number of Latinos earning an associate’s degree or higher increased 71% (3.8 million to 6.5 million). Angelica is on track for achieving her
college completion goals.

Ms. Solano has been a Latino Re-sources youth board member since 2013. “I got involved because I wanted to give back to other Latinos and encourage them to participate in our community. I have helped to organize Evanston’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, conduct voter registration outreach and work at our fundraising events.” Angelica explained how she has learned to balance school, work, family, friends and volunteering in her community. “I am inspired by the work I do because I believe anything is possible. I know I will achieve my educational goals and make a positive difference for Latinos in Evanston.”
