As a resident of the 9th Ward since 1971, I have come to know many Aldermen prior to their election and during their tenures on the City Council. One factor that frequently comes up during a campaign is how “ready” to serve as Alderman a given individual is. As experience has shown, some are ready to serve at their first Council meeting.
It is clear to me that Shawn Jones is eminently prepared to serve as 9th Ward alderman today. His extensive experience as a reporter for the RoundTable, covering the City Council for about eight years has not only allowed him to see how the Council, the Mayor, and the City Manager operate, but it has also revealed to him where some of the biggest problems the City are and what solutions to many of them are available — today. Shawn has attended about half of the nearly 1000 meetings of the Council and its many associated committee meetings, since he began reporting on them for the RoundTable.
He knows where City activities are working well and where improvement is in order. He has a number of innovative ideas on how to set priorities for the City, and for its budget. Shawn has come to his broad understanding by being a careful, intelligent, and thoughtful listener.
Shawn is a practicing attorney, concentrating his practice on assisting individuals with critical issues they face he not only understands their problems but is able to provide help to them. He has a pleasant, low key, and thoughtful demeanor. He listens carefully to what people say to him, and even more impressively, he responds to the question asked. Shawn is focused on helping residents of the 9th Ward and, indeed, all the citizens of Evanston.
We would be well served if Shawn Jones were to become a member of the City Council.

Cicely is the change we need in Evanston. Cicely walks the walk more than anyone I have met in Evanston. The founding of OPAL (Organization for Positive Action & Leadership) is a wonderful example of her efforts to engage all Evanston residents. Cicely knows Evanston's strengths and challenges. It is both her love for this community and her tireless efforts to make the city work for everyone that make her the right fit for Evanston City Council.

Jones for 9th Ward
We have an opportunity and an obligation to elect a new City Council in the coming weeks. With several seats up for grabs, we need to make sure we elect the right person to represent our ward and help lead positive change in our city. I sincerely believe Shawn Jones is the best person to represent the Ninth Ward as our alderman.
I have known Shawn for a long time and I respect him tremendously. He has volunteered his time to help the Chessmen Club of the North Shore, Inc. where our mission is to support efforts to bring food and needed services to the most vulnerable in our community. Shawn understands the issues faced by residents across Evanston and actively engages in processes to assist and improve lives.
Shawn has been quietly getting things done in Evanston for years. Leaders in the community refer friends and family to him to help with sensitive and important issues. People around town know that Shawn has the experience and expertise to help them remedy their problems.
Shawn is a hands-on leader who identifies problems and offers real solutions.
Please join me in voting Shawn Jones for 9th Ward alderman.

I'm asking for your vote for Cicely Fleming. In the two years I've known her, Cicely has become a good friend, and I believe she'll make a fantastic alderwoman for our ward.
I met Cicely at the first public meeting of OPAL, the nonprofit she founded 3 years ago after moving back to her native Evanston with her husband and three kids. I've seen her leadership in action, and I've seen OPAL already have a significant impact on Evanston's civic life in large part thanks to her inspiration.
I serve on OPAL's Education Committee and just last night was sitting in a meeting with her, and as always I was impressed at how she commands respect from everyone who hears her speak, in private and public settings, she so clearly knows her stuff. She cares deeply about governance and really listens to what's happening in people's lives to see how she can help.
I don't think I've ever met anyone who worked harder, I was in awe as Cicely finished a Master's in Public Administration while heading OPAL and being a mom while also being active in the PTA.
In recent weeks I've watched Cicely face off with her opponent at forums, and I believe there's a significant difference in their attitudes and approaches. I can assure you that this isn't one of those "it doesn't matter" kind of races.
I believe Cicely is the better listener to the folks in the 9th Ward and that she will do a better job serving the needs of our ward and the whole of Evanston.
Voter turnout in aldermanic races is traditionally low, and that makes it all the more important that Cicely get every possible vote. Early voting starts today, the hours are 9-5 today through Saturday all hours are listed at the City of Evanston website.
Thank you for voting Cicely!

RoundTable Editor's Comment for the Record
A letter to the editor entitled, “Voting for Fleming” that was published in the March 9 issue of the RoundTable and previously posted online, said in part, “She is endorsed by Jim McHolland, the principal at Chute …” Mr. McHolland did submit a letter to Ms. Fleming that is posted on her website, praising her work as PTA President at Chute and saying that she would be an asset to the 9th Ward and the City of Evanston. But Mr. McHolland told the RoundTable that he has not endorsed Ms. Fleming for alderman of the 9th Ward or encouraged people to vote for her. Ms. Fleming confirmed this. Mr. McHolland added, “I look forward to working with whoever wins the election.”

Claire Howard for Shawn Jones
I write in support of Shawn Jones for 9th Ward alderman. We have two good candidates in the aldermanic race this election cycle. No one should be in a position of casting a vote against either one of them. As for me, I’m casting my vote for Shawn and here’s why.
Shawn has earned my support for lots of reasons, including his position on key issues like safe neighborhoods, affordable housing, small business, and environmental sustainability. But, its Shawn’s commitment to transparency, access, communication, and accountability in the public service that makes the difference for me.
For the last 8 years, Shawn has covered the City Council for the Evanston RoundTable. He has been my window into the Council. He investigated, questioned, examined, and explained issues in a way that helped me form opinions about the issues and the people who supported or opposed them. He relied on and reported the facts in an objective and balanced way. He will, without question, bring those skills to the Council as alderman. In a year where the Mayor and a majority of the Council could turnover, it is essential that we have someone with Shawn’s experience, commitment, and determination representing us.
I hope my friends and neighbors will vote with me on April 4th. Let’s elect Shawn Jones as the 9th Ward’s next alderman.

Shawn Jones is the most qualified candidate to represent the 9th Ward as Alderman. As a City Council reporter and a lawyer, he knows the issues affecting Evanston in depth. Shawn currently helps residents deal with matters of immigration, housing, small business, employment and more, proving he is an advocate for our neighbors. He does more than point out problems, he offers real solutions. Shawn knows how to work with local leaders to move matters forward. I hope you join me in supporting Shawn Jones for 9th Ward Alderman.
