Dear 1st Ward Residents,If you haven't voted yet, I encourage you to do one thing before you do: visit the candidate Facebook pages of Lee Cabot ( and Judy Fiske ( Pay attention to how far back the posts go, their frequency, their quality, their substance, etc. Moreover, I recommend seeing if you notice differences in the tone of the conversations that play out on their respective campaign Facebook pages.

The quality of our public discourse matters, including what unfolds on Facebook and other social media. One of my favorite examples of this is Jon Stewart as a guest during the mid-aughts on the now-canceled Crossfire cable news show (canceled thanks to his illuminating, not to mention blistering, observations and critiques). Among many excellent points Stewart raised was this simple question: why do we have to fight?

One answer is that we don't. We don't have to fight. We can, and should, have spirited debate but without going low. When they go low, we go high, right?

There are 2 days left in this campaign. Let's all try to be decent to one another, no matter Tuesday's outcome.

Thank you,

Comment by: Cabot Rejects Edorsement From A Better Evanston

In a statement posted on her Facebook page yesterday and sent to the RoundTable today, Math 25, Lee Cabot said she did not know anyone from A Better Evanston and could not accept its endorsement. Her statement reads as follows:

“The endorsement I received from A Better Evanston was a complete surprise. Neither I nor our campaign have any connection to this organization or the people involved. I did not ask for their endorsement, and with no understanding of why I have received it, I cannot accept it. I recognize that its chairman previously sued the City of Evanston, an action I firmly reject, especially when it was to fight gun safety legislation. Nor do I align with the Republican Party as he does. As for A Better Evanston and its supporters and contributors, I assume they do so for the purpose stated on their website: that it is involved to “encourage smart development that increases revenue available for city use without putting more pressure on home property tax rates. We're doing this to benefit our schools, important civic programs and keep the city on pace for smart growth.” These goals I support and have spoken on often. It is easy to find things that divide us. Let’s focus on where we agree and on our larger calling to solve the very real issues facing Evanston.”

Fiske is the Only Choice
If you want an independent voice for Evanston's First Ward residents, Judy is it. She has promoted development that is advantageous for the ward and the city, as opposed to that which would take advantage of the city.

Judy is is constant contact with residents or her ward and holds regular meeting with us and with Northwestern and other business interests.

When big-money and outside interests support Lee Cabot and claim that she'll put "Evanston First", I'm reminded of a national campaign that claimed the same thing....

In addition, it seems to me that there is an inherent conflict of interest with anyone who works for Northwestern and wants to be an alderman as well.

Help the First Ward retain its independent voice--vote for Judy Fiske!

If you had a choice between two doctors to treat you for a rare condition – one a general practitioner with no specialized training and limited office hours, and one a well-regarded specialist with years of experience and extended office hours, who would you see? That sums up the choice for First Ward voters. Judy Fiske brings experience, vision, and amazing accessibility to solve Ward One’s challenges and build a prosperous future for Evanston. Her opponent is a novice who has been entirely silent on critical Ward One issues such as planning, open space, and development. Plus, since she’s an employee of Northwestern, she’ll have to recuse herself from votes and deliberations on any issues involving our city’s largest employer and property owner. That's like a surgeon operating with one hand tied behind their back! Doesn't make any sense.

At this crucial time, when we are electing a new mayor and our city’s top planning staffer (Mark Muenzer) has departed for California, Judy’s experience – including on planning/zoning issues -is exactly what Ward One needs. She is a proven winner who is a true independent and effective voice to represent Ward One and achieve our shared vision for a better city. That’s why I am voting for Judy Fiske.

Comment by: Amy Morton for Lee Cabot

I am endorsing Lee Cabot for alderman of the 1st Ward. As a business owner, I have a vested interest in making sure that our downtown is represented by someone who is honorable and fair with a sense toward economic growth. I believe that Lee is the right person to bridge the city, businesses and patrons for the best possible outcome for all. She has the right experience and business acumen combined with the ability to collaborate to move toward a more sustainable business environment, while understanding all of the demographic diversity of Evanston. I encourage you to vote for Lee Cabot on April 4th.

We support Lee Cabot for 1st Ward Alderman because of her demonstrated commitment to all of Evanston. She has lived here for over 20 years and has a son who is at ETHS and went through District 65 schools. She has worked in Evanston for over 15 years, first at the Evanston History Center and now at Northwestern, experiences which give her even more insight into our city. She served for four years in a volunteer role as President of the board of Foundation 65, which promotes literacy and arts for all District 65 students, and also served on the volunteer boards of Evanston Library Friends, Cherry Preschool, Orrington School, and Shorefront. She is highly educated and thoughtful and has promised to be responsive, inclusive, and collaborative. Lee exemplifies the type of leadership our ward, and Evanston, needs.

Fiske for 1st Ward
I have lived in the 1st Ward for 50 years, thus have seen a lot of change- some good, some bad.
Since Judy Fiske has been my alderperson, I have supported all the positions she has taken. She is in favor of growth and progress when it is in keeping with the character and beauty of Evanston and to the benefit of residents in her ward.
Her ward includes Downtown Evanston, Northwestern University, and many residential areas, which sometimes have been endangered by City and University expansion. Judy Fiske has helped keep that growth positive, while always diligently working to protect the quality of life for the residents who share the area.
She is smart, works hard, has a proven track record, and deserves our vote.
