ETHS Hosts Family Action Network event with Author Jesmyn Ward

Evanston Township High School will host "Sing, Unburied, Sing: A Conversation with Jesmyn Ward" on Wednesday, September 13 at 7:00pm, in the school auditorium. The event, free and open to the public, is suitable for ages 12 and up. PDs are available for educators.

Jesmyn Ward's distinctive writing addresses relevant topics such as justice and injustice, poverty, incarceration, racial profiling, family, drug abuse, faith and the supernatural, and the limits and limitlessness of love. One of the most anticipated books of 2017, Sing, Unburied, Sing portrays life on the gulf coast of Mississippi-lush and menacing and marked by a precise rural vernacular-and life within a family weighted by history and poverty but bonded by love.

Ward won the 2011 National Book Award for her second novel, Salvage of the Bones. Her follow-up memoir, Men We Reaped, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and The Fire This Time, an essay collection on modern blackness for which she served as editor, became a New York Times bestseller.

Ward received her MFA from the University of Michigan and is currently an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Tulane University. From 2008-2010, she had a Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University. She was the John and Renée Grisham Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi for the 2010-2011 academic year. In 2016, the American Academy of Arts and Letters selected Ward for the Strauss Living Award.

Ward will be interviewed by Natalie Moore, South Side Reporter for WBEZ. Moore is the author of The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation, winner of the 2016 Chicago Review of Books Award for nonfiction and a Buzzfeed best nonfiction book of 2016. She has an M.S.J. in Newspaper Management from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and a B.A. in Journalism from Howard University.

ETHS is located at 1600 Dodge Ave., Evanston, 60201. The auditorium is wheelchair accessible. Guests should plan to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to 7:00pm to find parking and seats. Parking is available in the lot across from the main entrance, off of Dodge Avenue, or in the lots behind the high school. Parking is also available along Dodge Avenue according to posted City of Evanston signs.

The September 13 presentation is sponsored by Family Action Network (FAN), in partnership with Evanston Township High School District 202. For more information about FAN events and sponsors for the 2017-18 presentations, visit www.familyactionnetwork.net.
