The Traffic Guy hears ...
… that skunks are on the prowl in the pre-dawn hours. A couple walking in the arboretum recently just before sunrise came across two. It was so dark, one walker reported, that the skunk’s white stripe almost seemed to float above the ground. Or maybe it was a ghostie, getting ready for the Zombie Scramble that will take place there in a few days.

Hooked on Fishing: By the Light of the Walleye Moon
This is one of my favorite times of the year. Some call it the “Harvest Moon,” some refer to the moon phase as the “Hunters Moon,” but to those of us who fish, this is a “Walleye Moon.”

The Traffic Guy hears ...
… that, speaking of the community as a whole, an October 2016 Chicago Rent Report, published by Apartment List, found that Evanston has the second-highest rent prices in the Chicago metropolitan area. Two-bedroom units have a median rent of $1,800, and median rent prices are up 10.8% from October last year. Market forces are making Evanston less and less affordable.

Hooked on Fishing: Fishing for Walleye
This is the time of year many local fisherman get into walleye fishing above all other species. The fall of the year brings the walleyes into bigger schools and shallower water as the lakes and rivers cool with the approaching winter. Walleyes will be looking for food for the cold water season and now is their time to go hunting.

In Autumn, Trees Show Their True Colors
Even before the autumnal equinox, scatterings of yellow leaves foretell the coming of fall. By mid October, the northern Illinois landscape will be flush with a range of autumn hues that should last several weeks, if the weather cooperates. But trees don’t turn yellow, red, and gold for our leaf-peeping pleasure; the process that causes trees to change color helps them stockpile nutrients before they drop their leaves and settle in for a long winter’s nap.

A gravitational wave astronomer at Northwestern University recently won the L’Oreal USA “For Women in Science” fellowship award.
