Hooked on Fishing: Santa's Fisherman Closet
By Dick Peach

Ho-Ho-Ho! It’s that time of year for gift suggestions for the anglers in the families. For novices, or those who will be starting to fish this coming year, a good choice is a rod/reel combination kit. Nothing makes someone want to fish more than if they have their very own fishing rod. For the very young there are combos with Star Wars, superheroes and cartoon characters for around $15. If the angler is a little older/more experienced both the Zebco 202/204 combo or a Shakespeare Ugly Stik combo for around $30 both make great, welcomed gifts.

Of course every fisherman needs a tackle box (even if they don’t have much tackle to put in it) and both Plano and Flambeau brands make some single-tray tackle boxes for $15-$17, that are great starter boxes for any fisherman. Something to put in that new tackle box is a tackle kit. These come in a variety of arrays; special for bass, for walleye, for panfish, etc. The soft plastic kits give the fisherman a variety of baits and colors for $15 to $30 from every lure company. Hard baits are also available in kits starting from $20.

Items that can make life easier for the young as well as the seasoned angler also make good gifts. A good quality fishing glove for handling those hard-to-hold fish is the Lindy Fish Handling Glove for around $25. A good pair of stainless steel pliers from Rapala for around $15 will be appreciated. A pair of polarized sunglass for $10-$15 is also worth considering. They are always a good investment for the fisherman.

All these items are available from such local shops as Fish-Tec in Morton Grove or Dick’s Sporting Goods in Niles, and available online from Cabela’s, Gander Mountain or Bass Pro Shops. Next time: some favorite winter escapes for fishing. Until next time … keep a tight line.
