An article from a bygone era the writer said "The death of any man diminishes me"! Hat's off to Mayor Tisdahl, in her stance for the young man killed in the 1300 block of Darrow a while ago! In the Roundtable article it was noted that she wished that she could do more to prevent such occurrences though noteworthy her wish is just that a wish! Back to the thought from that bygone era, with the death of other men, our own worth rises or falls! As is noted in these last days life has lost its value many now see materials as of more worth than they themselves seemingly unaware that without life nothing else matters! Too many in today’s world fail to recognize that our worth and value is attached to the value and worth of other men! Each life’s value and worth is determined by the worth of the least of among us, when they are diminished so too are we!

Anti-idling: As during many previous winters, there are at least 6 individuals on my block who warm up cars for their personal comfort. This “habit” has worsened due to installed remote starters and cheap fuel. Half these people are either nurses or teachers. Don’t they care about our health or the future of our children?
In judging science fairs for the Chicago Public Schools, I’ve encountered students who are concerned with the acidification and heating of our oceans from CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Evanston’s District 65 has an anti-idling restriction around its schools, due to high instances of asthma and other breathing problems with our kids. The City has an anti-idling ordinance for large vehicles, excluding passenger cars, even though our neighborhoods have these same children (and adults) with breathing difficulties.
We have wasted our time with useless laws. What Evanston needs to do is amend the existing ordinance to include all vehicles, impose rigid fines, and provide strict enforcement year-round. Furthermore, a national grass roots movement should be formed to ban the auto industry and the aftermarket from providing these devices. We should remember that we are here on this earth because our ancestors survived previous winters – without central heating systems or putting fires under their horses.

Both teach the importance of humanity and the golden rule of do unto others. Why is it OK to have Buddha heads in city spaces but against the law to have a manger or cross. Equality would mean we allow all religious images or none.

The Red Line .He is 4 or 5, standing on his seat
Precariously propped against the glass
Of their train as it streams past just feet away from windows
Of toothbrushes, cornflake boxes and hanging plants.
It is a new world, and he must share it
The cars below, the sudden gardens
The running man and dog.
His calls of “Look, Mommy, look”
Cannot penetrate her cell-phone world.
Perhaps she will return to him when they reach home
