School District 202 to hold Feb. 27 Workshop on Goals
On Feb. 27,  the District 202 School Board will hold a day-long workshop, 8:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m., as part of the goals revision process that was launched in the fall of 2015.

District 65 Achievement and Accountablity Report
On Jan. 25, District 65 administrators presented the 2015 Achievement and Accountability Report that presents data showing how students have performed on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test given in the spring of the last four years.

District 65/202 Committee Focuses on Struggling Readers
At the Joint District 65/District 202 Committee meeting on Jan. 21, Board members and administrators from each District continued their discussion of how to implement the Districts’ Joint Literacy Goal. That goal, adopted by both Boards in January 2014, is to "ensure that all students are proficient readers and college and career ready by the time they reach 12th grade."

ETHS Health Care Center Enters 20th Year
This February, Evanston Township High School’s School-Based Health Center will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Opening in 1996, the Health Center is a partnership between NorthShore University HealthSystem, Evanston Township High School, and the Evanston Health Department, with funding from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Health Center staff are employees of NorthShore University HealthSystem.

District 65 Board Accepts Gift to Help Refugees
The District 65 Board on Jan. 25 approved acceptance of a gift from two private citizens to "support the settlement of recent refugee students within the District to life in Evanston."

Outside the Lines Teen Book Club

Outside The Lines Book Club is a new teen reading series that happens monthly at the Evanston Public Library Teen Loft. One Wednesday a month, teens grades 6-12 are invited to discuss a pre-determined YA fiction title about strong teen protagonists pushing back again normative identities to live their lives with pride.

Checkmate, at Oakton School
More than 200 Evanston school kids showed up at Oakton Elementary School for the Winter Chess Tournament. The crowd was buzzing with excitement as kids representing most District 65 elementary schools, plus pupils from Chiaravalle Montessori, St. Athanasius, and St. Joan of Arc Schools, took their places in Oakton’s sun-filled auditorium.

Evanston/Skokie School District 65 and Evanston Township High School District 202 will jointly host State of the Schools addresses by both superintendents at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28, in the Evanston Township High School auditorium, 1600 Dodge Ave.

Social Promotion vs. Retention: Two Bad Choices
At its Jan. 11 meeting, the District 65 School Board’s Policy Committee briefly continued its discussion about the relative merits of social promotion – advancing students who have not mastered the work at their grade level – versus retention – mandating that a child repeat a grade. The matter was first discussed on Oct. 12.

Guns Still Allowed in School Parking Lots
Nearly two years ago – in April of 2014 – the District 65 School Board sent a letter to Evanston’s representatives in Springfield, alerting them that, under the State’s Conceal Carry law, properly locked and stowed firearms may be brought into school parking lots, despite conflicting language in District policies suggested by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB).

District 65 Will Easily Align Its Suspension Policies With State Law
Although a bill signed into law last August by Governor Bruce Rauner "significantly changes disciplinary strategies available to school districts," Assistant Superintendent of District 65 Schools John Price says the District’s suspension policies were already headed in the direction Gov. Rauner mandated.

ETHS Staff Appointed to State Nutriton Organization
Evanston Township High School’s Director of Nutrition Services Kim Minestra and Assistant Director of Nutrition Services Emily Conti have been appointed to the Illinois School Nutrition Association (ILSNA) Board for the 2015-16 school year. Ms. Minestra will serve as President of the association and Ms. Conti will serve as its Public Relations Committee Co-Chair.

ETHS Students at State Music Conference
Three students from Evanston Township High School were selected to participate in the 2016 Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) All-State Conference to be held in January in Peoria. The conference is the premier event of the ILMEA, which will bring together thousands of people from the music education learning community for clinic sessions, performances and networking events.

ETHS Student Named Semifinalist in National Science Competition
Evanston Township High School senior Zane Kashner was named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search 2016. Semifinalists were selected from 1,750 entrants from 512 high schools in 43 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and six American and international high schools overseas. As a semifinalist, Zane is among the top 300 science research students in the country, and one of only five from Illinois.

ETHS DECA Students Take Home Multiple Medals
Evanston Township High School students participated in the annual North Suburban Area DECA Career Conference in Rosemont last month. More than 1,300 students from 23 schools from across the north suburban area participated in the competition, including 37 ETHS students, 22 of whom took home medals in their respective events and eight of those finishing first overall in their event.
