ETHS on Best High Schools List
U.S. News & World Report released its "Best High Schools" rankings for 2016, placing Evanston Township High School (ETHS) at 13 in Illinois and 452 in the nation.

SB 231 Would Cut State Funding to D65 and D202
ISBE has not yet calculated the impact of SB 231, but it appears that the impact would be about the same as SB 1 that was introduced last year, after a five-year phase in period.

Committee Discusses Policies on Promotion
At the April 18 meeting of School District 65’s Board Policy Committee, Board members and administrators reviewed the District’s policy on promotion. John Price, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, presented recommendations about promotion and retention that, he said, “walk a fine line between two mutually exclusive requirements: the State policy on social promotion and what we want to do.”

Interview with Dr. Witherspoon
On March 8, I interviewed Dr. Eric Witherspoon, the superintendent of Evanston Township High School. He can be seen walking through the halls and lunchroom, greeting students and staff alike. You can always tell when Dr. Witherspoon is around, because his smile and personality brightens the room.

Speaking Their Truth: ETHS Poetry Week
Hundreds of ETHS students packed the Michael Resource Center on April 7 to listen to their peers recite poems they had written as part of the 15th annual Poetry Week. The students came during their lunch hours to hear a diverse range of styles and content; all very personal, all very real.

D65 Exhausts Capital Spending for 2016, Future Spending Severely Constrained
Once an actual CPI of 0.7% for 2015 and a future assumed rate of 1.5% are plugged into the formula, Speers calculated that the District has already maximized the amount of bonds it could issue in 2016, said Dr. Brown, adding, “We expect to have no room to issue additional bonds this year.”

District 65 Committee Discusses Equity Statement
The discussion topic at the April 18 meeting of School District 65’s Policy Committee was an equity statement. The District’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, completed after gathering public input in several different ways, contains goals, strategies and measures of success for all students.

Pedro Noguera: Address the Needs of Children in a Holistic Fashion
A theme running through Dr. Noguera’s presentation is that poverty and other inequities related to poverty (e.g., lack of preparation for school, hunger, health issues, lack of stable housing) interact with student learning outcomes and that schools cannot be expected to solve these problems alone.

Interviews About Disabilities
For my community service in Senior Studies I went to Park School and shadowed Iden Nowlin, a teacher who works with three-  and four-year-olds, and is also from Evanston. Being there has been such a treat and I wanted some more insight from Ms. Nowlin about her ideas, thoughts and feeling about exceptionalities.
