Each year, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) honors exemplary teachers, administrators, student support personnel, educational service personnel, community volunteers, board members and teams from school districts across the state. This school year, staff members from Evanston Township High School (ETHS) received awards of recognition and merit from the ISBE’s “Those Who Excel” recognition program.

Nicole Parker received an award of recognition. Ms. Parker is a teacher in the ETHS History Department and has worked for the past 16 years to help all students achieve success through outstanding classroom instruction and course development.

David Chan, ETHS Technology Integration Specialist, also received an award of merit. Mr. Chan has worked in the Instructional and Information Technology Department for three years and has helped to transform the use of instructional technology in ETHS classrooms.

An award of merit also went to ETHS Humanities teacher Melissa Costello, an Early Career Educator. Costello has been teaching for three years and has incorporated the Illinois Learning Standards and skills-based assessments into daily lessons and curriculum for her Freshman Humanities-History and 20th-Century Russia classes.

ETHS’s rapid response project management team, The Huddle, received an award of recognition. The Huddle is comprised of the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, the Information Instructional Technology director, the English Department chair, the History Department chair, the Science Department chair, the Director of Equity and Academic Supports and the Director of Research and Evaluation.

Together they monitor course implementation, review data, connect students to academic supports, and work to improve communication and messaging. They work to address implementation of the restructuring of freshman year at ETHS, focusing last school year on Earned Honors Humanities.

ETHS also recognized David Phillips, Jr. as its Employee of the Year. Mr. Phillips is a member of the business office staff, working as a duplicating specialist. He has worked as a volunteer and mentor, coaching both middle school and college-bound athletes.
