Agenda Set for Feb. 27 Workshop on ETHS Goals
By Kelley Elwood

The District 202 Board, at its Feb. 22 meeting, discussed the goals revision workshop to be held on Feb. 27 in room N112 at ETHS.

The Board is currently undergoing a planned three-year review of the District’s six goals approved originally on Oct. 9, 2012.  An initial draft of the revised goals, of which there are now five, is under review. Many of the proposed changes serve to update and eliminate outdated targets and measures.

At the Feb. 27 meeting, Board member Doug Holt expressed concern about how the draft goals were created. Citing the “peculiar circumstances” of the Board’s Oct. 20, 2015 special meeting, a notice of which was not posted on the District’s website until two hours before the meeting, Mr. Holt said that the public was not “privy” to the Board discussion that ultimately led to the elimination of Goal 6 which deals with maximizing the reputation of ETHS and comparing the school to other neighboring high schools as a measure of success.  Board member Jonathan Baum also took issue with whether the special meeting was legal and whether the Board should have made decisions on the goals. Dr. Witherspoon and Mr. Metz both asserted that the meeting was “properly noticed” and the fact that it was not posted on the website did not make it an illegal meeting under the Open Meetings Act.

Ultimately, the Board decided on Feb. 22 to move forward with the current draft of the proposed goals which will be reviewed at Feb. 27 workshop.

Two versions of the workshop agenda were reviewed by the Board, but no official actions were taken. After the meeting, the RoundTable was provided with a copy of “agenda 2”, the version most favored by Board members.

The community workshop will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a light breakfast and networking. At 8:15 a.m., moderator Barbara Toney from the Illinois Association of School Boards will make introductions and give an overview of the day. From 8:45-9:30 a.m., small groups will work to uncover and articulate the underlying values and beliefs that guide the goal setting and decision making process, discussing their views on student and teacher learning, and the responsibility of the District to the community and the community to the District. A review of the District’s mission statement and equity and excellence statement will run from about 9:45-10:45 a.m. after which, Eric Witherspoon and Pete Bavis will give a report on the current goals, the progress that has been made and some background information on targets and the goal review process.

At 11:00 a.m. and again at 1:00 p.m., participants will be asked to pick a small group to join, where one of the five proposed goals will be reviewed and discussed. Participants may chose to focus on one goal or select a different goal to discuss at each of the two break-out sessions. Lunch will be served to all participants between the two break-out groups at 12:15 p.m. At 2:15 p.m., each group will make a summary report to the larger group. The workshop will adjourn at 3:00 p.m.

It was agreed that a special Board meeting would need to be scheduled after the workshop to discuss feedback and finalize Goals 2020.

All members of the public are invited to participate in the workshop and contribute to the process of revising the District goals. RSVPs are requested but are not mandatory for attendance and can be made by emailing goals2020@eths.k12.il.us.  Currently, there are 25 confirmed attendees but the Board expects many more to come. For more information and to see the current draft of the goals, go to the “Manual, Goals & Policy” tab (http://www.eths.k12.il.us/domain/226) in the Board of Education sections of the ETHS website.
