Protest Down Ridge Avenue
About 90 people gathered on Church Street just west of Ridge Avenue on July 14, and at 5:30 p.m. they walked into the middle of Ridge Avenue when red lights were stopping north and south bound traffic, and then marched south on Ridge.

How Police Are Curbing Shootings
Since Jan. 1, there have been 10 incidents in which people have been shot in Evanston. There have been two fatalities, and a total of 10 persons wounded. Nine of the victims were 25 years old or younger. Six were in their teens. Most of the shootings have not been solved by bringing criminal charges.

City Puts Library Parking Lot Up for Sale
City Council voted on July 11, to authorize the City Manager to negotiate the potential sale of the parking lot east of the library and directly behind the Woman’s Club building for possible development.

Linz & Vail Becomes Backlot Coffee
After taking over Linz & Vail, new owners John Kim and Isaac Bloom have changed the name to Backlot Coffee. Backlot is a neighborhood name familiar to many in the Central Street community. Both owners are inspired by the community space the name represents and wanted to honor the community with the new name.

Construction on IDOT Projects to Resume July 5
On June 30, the Illinois General Assembly approved a “stopgap” budget for fiscal year 2017. Among other things, the budget allows funding for social services, education and “agencies” and this will allow work to continue on the Emerson-Ridge-Green Bay and the Dodge Avenue protected bike lane projects.

Council Adopts Nuisance Premise Ordinance
On June 27, City Council unanimously approved a Nuisance Premise Ordinance, which is intended to provide tools to abate criminal offenses and code violations on all properties in the City, both owner-occupied and rental. Council also unanimously approved a Landlord Tenant Ordinance, which provides that if a tenant engages in or permits criminal activity on the rental property, the tenant may be evicted.

New Goodwill Store Slated for Evanston Plaza
A new Goodwill Store and Donation Center is set to move into the Evanston Plaza shopping center. City Council introduced the matter on the consent agenda on June 27. Some residents protested the decision, saying the store furthers the shopping center’s reputation as a “discount” center that will attract lower-end tenants as a result.
