City Council signaled a desire to roll back regulations affecting taxi cab owners and operators in Evanston, indicating an understanding that largely unregulated Uber, Lyft, and similar services enjoyed an unfair advantage as long as taxis faced strict, expensive and onerous City ordinances.

City Alleges Water From Water Main Near James Park Contaminated
A lawsuit filed by the City of Evanston against Nicor and ComEd alleges that dangerous substances penetrated water mains along Dodge Avenue “causing the contamination of, and threatening additional contamination to, the City’s drinking water.”

Main Street Improvements In the Planning Stage
At a Second  Ward meeting on June 2, Dave Stoneback, the City’s Director of Public Works, said the City is planning to make improvements along Main Street from the North Shore Channel to Dodge Avenue in two phases.

Anti-Gun-Violence Rally at Fountain Square
Orange was the color of the day for National Gun Violence Awareness Day, June 2, and nearly everyone in the crowd of more than 100 at Fountain Square wore at least a touch of orange. Speakers touched on the many layers of gun violence and its ripple effect on families, friends, and communities.

Special Olympics Torch Run Passes Through Evanston

Running and walking, pedaling bicycles and riding motorcycles, two dozen supporters of the Special Olympics greeted the torch at Isabella Street on June 5 and escorted it to the Evanston Police Station, 1454 Elmwood Ave.

Council Rejects Ordinance Further Regulating Massage Therapists
Once again, Council displayed no appetite for such “’overreaching” overregulation. This time, rather than send it back to staff for reworking, Council rejected the ordinance outright by 7-1 vote.

Council Signals Decision to Spend Impact Fees on Nearby Community
A staff memo proposing that taxes collected on waste transferred through the Church Street waste transfer station be split between the City’s general fund and a capital project fund fell flat at the May 24 City Council meeting. Council voted instead to hold the matter pending input from the community nearest the station.
