Open Call for Construction Job Candidates March 29
Submitted by the City of Evanston

The City of Evanston will hold an open call for residents interested in applying for its Workforce Development Program on Sat., March 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Parasol Room of the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.

The Workforce Development Program formed as a partnership between Northwestern University and the City to help Evanston residents qualify for and attain employment and apprenticeship opportunities on campus construction, renovation and maintenance projects.

Lightly skilled and experienced candidates are invited to attend the open call anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to get more details about the program and apply. An application can be completed in advance or at the event. Residents can find the application online at www.cityofevanston.org/workforce, and at City of Evanston recreation centers, the Main Evanston Public Library, the Evanston Youth Job Center and the Howard Area Community Center.

All interested candidates must attend the open call to turn in their completed application, and must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must bring proof of Evanston residency. This may include a piece of mail received at your place of residence within the past 60 days (utility bill, cable bill, etc.). Candidates must reside in zip codes 60201 or 60202.
  • Must bring a current resume. Only residents with a current copy of their resume will be considered for open positions. For resume assistance, visit one of Evanston’s many workforce job centers.
  • Must present valid photo identification. This includes a driver’s license or ID card issued by the state (must have a valid future expiration date). Other forms of acceptable supplemental ID include voter’s registration card, union card, flagger certification card, or any form of formal construction training card.

Following the open call event, the City will call qualified candidates back for interviews in April, with dates to be announced.

The City will then provide a pool of qualified Evanston residents to Northwestern, which will work with its contractors and subcontractors to ensure that residents are employed on appropriate construction projects to the extent possible. It’s important to note that all potential candidates will still be subject to the hiring process of Northwestern and its contractors and subcontractors.

For more information, visit www.cityofevanston.org/workforce, or call 311 (847-448-4311 outside of Evanston).
