Rep. Schakowsky's Statement on the Budget Deal

Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on her vote against the budget deal:

“Budgets are about priorities and those priorities must reflect the realities that are facing individuals, families and businesses around the country.  Even though I support the three month SGR fix preventing cuts that could cause Medicare beneficiaries to lose access to their doctors on January 1st, I voted against the budget deal today.  This budget doesn’t reflect the priorities of our country and doesn’t extend emergency unemployment benefits.  If Congress goes home without acting, on December 28 – three days after Christmas – 1.3 million people will lose their benefits.  Making sure that they can keep their modest benefits should be a priority for all of us.  Cutting critical unemployment insurance benefits will harm both families and local economies, and result in the loss of 200,000 more jobs.

“Congress must pass a budget that invests in good jobs, the economy and education and that reject proposals to cut pensions and retirement.  Federal workers have already given up over $140 billion in salary and benefit cuts over the past three years as a result of budget deals that put the burden on them.  It is time to look at closing corporate tax loopholes.   It’s time to ask corporations that shift jobs overseas, oil and gas companies, and private jet owners to contribute their fair share.”

Representative Jan Schakowsky's statement about critical issues explains the need for voters to be more involved with a budget that is being proposed by our federal legislatures. Please let her know that you agree with her decision not to vote for the spiteful budget "deal". Thousands of Americans will be harmed by that proposed budget. Thank you, Jan, for voting against the proposed Budget Bill.
