Shared Streets Evanston Coming Sept. 1

There will be more than just dancing in the streets at Shared Streets Evanston,  scheduled for Sept. 1 on Dempster Street between Elmwood and Chicago avenues. All are invited to enjoy the street free of motorized traffic. The event, sponsored by Evanston 150’s Walk & Roll committee, is presented to the Evanston community to promote biking and walking.

The route will feature two open blocks on Dempster Street, plus a car-free area on Sherman Place in front of the Dempster CTA  stop. Shared Streets symbolically reclaims the street for people and will demonstrate two concepts: the street as a place, and the complete street.

Residents are invited to bring a bike, a skateboard, a scooter or just their own two feet to enjoy the public realm, including the following features:

• Evanston Bike Club: bike safety education

• Active Transportation: Chicagoland bicycle information and child play area

• Bucephalus Bikes: family bike tours

• Evanston History Center with Mayre Press: historical photos and walking tour

• The Recyclery: used bike collection drive

• Piccolo Theatre: comedy theater

• McGaw YMCA: Zumba class

• Citizens Greener Evanston: education and demonstration

• Evanston Environmental Association and Evanston Ecology Center: bicycle decorating

• Escola de Samba: drumming parade

• Chinese Cultural Academy: tai chi chuan

• Lighthouse Yoga: yoga

• Cynthia Narcisi: hula hooping

• Come Out Dancing: salsa dance lesson

• Y.O.U.: TBD

• School of Rock: rock concert

• Toastmasters Evanston: speeches (all are welcome)

• Frances Willard Historical Association: outreach

• Southeast Evanston Association: outreach

• Allan Breedlove and Ndidi Nwaneri, Loyola University: “Ask the Philosopher”

• Sharon Weeks, Second Baptist Church: “Ask the Minister”

• Rev. Bret Lortie, Unitarian Church of Evanston: “Ask the Minister”

• Mystery guests: “Ask the Elected Official”

• Turin Bicycle: bicycle lighting show

• Velosmith Bicycle Studio: year-round bicycle show

• Zen Buddhist Temple: Zen chanting and outreach

• Clare Tallon Ruen: LakeDance

• Evanston Environmental Association: Bike parade
