Caneva, Assistant Director of the City's Health Department.

Carl Caneva has been appointed to the new position of Assistant Director of the Evanston Health Department. 

In this position, Mr. Caneva will assist and oversee the planning, coordinating and administration of a broad range of public health services for the Health Department including environmental health, food protection programs, lead poisoning prevention program, rodent control, beach water testing and surveillance, emergency preparedness and response, and communicable disease surveillance.   

In his new role, he will also manage the integration of property standards code enforcement as the function is transferred from the Department of Community and Economic Development to the Health Department next month to work along side our existing environmental health inspection staff using best-practice public health inspection models. 

Health Department Director Evonda Thomas-Smith  will continue to engage community stakeholders and establish partnerships to implement strategies to address community health needs. By taking a broad stroke approach to both the community –wide health assessment and implementation strategies, the goal is to ensure the data, processes and outputs add value to all community partners which is inclusive of our two hospitals and the new Erie Family Health Center.  

Mr. Caneva has served as the City’s Environmental Health Division Manager since 2008. He began his career with the City of Evanston in 2004.   

Mr. Caneva is a licensed Environmental Health Practitioner, Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian, Certified Food Service Sanitation Manger and Instructor, Licensed Lead Assessor, Certified Structural Pest Control Technician and Certified Retail Food Inspector. He has an M.A. Geography and Environmental Studies from Northeastern Illinois University and a B.S. Environmental Health from Illinois State University.
