Council Bytes: Highlights From the Feb. 13 City Council Meeting
By Matt Simonette

The Council will continue discussing Northwestern’s potential acquisition of property at 1840 Oak Ave. within the Research Park zoning district.

Alderman Judy Fiske, 1st Ward, praised City staff for delivering a report detailing the initial contracts on the site, which noted that properties there were intended to remain on the City’s property tax rolls. In the previous Council meeting, Ald. Fiske noted the importance of having clear written agreements regarding the transfer and sale of properties, and the subsequent implications for the City tax rolls.

City Clerk Rodney Greene said early voting had begun and reminded the audience that the Feb. 28 primary election only applied to the mayoral candidates.

Addressing the aldermanic candidates, Mr. Greene said, “If anyone thought they were going to win on the first round, get it out of your mind.”

Clerk Greene added that, should a mayoral candidate win more than 50% of the vote, the election will be determined then, and a mayoral general election will not be on the April ballot.

The City continues to negotiate with Skokie about the rate it pays for water. Evanston officials have long lamented the low rates that Skokie has paid for water service, especially now that water sales to other municipalities have picked up some steam. City officials fear that other cities might try to leverage Skokie’s rates to negotiate theirs down.

“It’s very difficult to negotiate if Skokie is getting a lesser rate, but we won’t turn off the spigot,” said Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl.

The Council also authorized the city manager to enter into negotiations with Sweet Vendome, Inc., for a potential business at 633 Howard St. The location is the former site of an Evanston Police Department  outpost; In 2016, a Jamaican restaurant on the Chicago side of Howard, Good to Go, expressed interest in the site, but the City pushed for it to be a new location for the Strawdog Theatre company, plans that eventually fell through when Strawdog decided not to relocate to Evanston.
