Snow Update 1/2 at 2 p.m.
Submitted by James Maiworm, Assistant Director of Public Works

As of this morning Evanston has received 11.1” of snow. One more lake effect band is set to pass thru around 2:00 and may provide an additional 1” or so.

Cleanup of the main roads and residential streets continues and the break in the snowfall this morning has given us a chance to catch up a bit.

After the next band of lake effect snow hits we will put a big push on the main roads to get them ready for rush hour.

The snow emergency parking restrictions will be in effect until 6pm.

Overnight a snow route parking ban will go into effect at 11pm. This will give us the opportunity to clear all the parking lanes along snow routes and cleanup the parking areas in the business districts.

Tomorrow the second half of our snow emergency will go into effect at 8am..

Compliance with the snow parking restrictions has been good.

In addition the City issued the following infomation:

Snow Storm Update for January 2, 2014

In response to the heavy snowfall, the City of Evanston has opened the three Downtown Evanston Parking Garages for free usage effective immediately. The locations are the 1800 Maple Self Park, the Church St. Self Park and the Sherman Plaza Self Park. The garages will not charge anyone until after 11:59pm on Sunday evening, January 5. Any cars leaving the garage after 11:59pm on Sunday will be charged.

Special pick-up collections will be suspended until Monday, January 6 and recycling collections will be delayed because four of the city's recycling trucks are supporting snow removal operations. Residents should place recycling out according to the original holiday schedule (Wednesday's recycling out today and Thursday's recycling out on Friday). Crews will strive to collect all recycling by Sunday evening. Weather permitting, the regular collection schedule will resume on Monday, January 6, 2014.

Please note that sledding and tobogganing on the James Park large center hill is prohibited. Sledding on the small and intermediate hill at James Park is at the user's own risk. Users are responsible for determining if conditions are safe for sledding and adults are responsible for supervising children in their care. Tobogganing, skiing and snowboarding are not permitted.

Evanston's three outdoor ice rinks are closed due to the heavy snow. Parks crews are removing snow at community centers and parking lots. They will begin removing snow from the rinks when snow emergency duties are completed.

On January 1, the City of Evanston declared a snow emergency parking ban for January 2 and 3 (8am-6pm) and a snow route parking ban from 11pm January 2 through 6am January 3. Details here.

Residents are encouraged to contact 3-1-1 with any snow questions or concerns at 847-448-4311 or
