In response to the heavy snowfall, the City of Evanston has opened the three Downtown Evanston Parking Garages for free usage effective immediately. The locations are the 1800 Maple Self Park, the Church St. Self Park and the Sherman Plaza Self Park. The garages will not charge anyone until after 11:59pm on Sunday evening, January 5. Any cars leaving the garage after 11:59pm on Sunday will be charged.
Special pick-up collections will be suspended until Monday, January 6 and recycling collections will be delayed because four of the city's recycling trucks are supporting snow removal operations. Residents should place recycling out according to the original holiday schedule (Wednesday's recycling out today and Thursday's recycling out on Friday). Crews will strive to collect all recycling by Sunday evening. Weather permitting, the regular collection schedule will resume on Monday, January 6, 2014.
Please note that sledding and tobogganing on the James Park large center hill is prohibited. Sledding on the small and intermediate hill at James Park is at the user's own risk. Users are responsible for determining if conditions are safe for sledding and adults are responsible for supervising children in their care. Tobogganing, skiing and snowboarding are not permitted.
Evanston's three outdoor ice rinks are closed due to the heavy snow. Parks crews are removing snow at community centers and parking lots. They will begin removing snow from the rinks when snow emergency duties are completed.
On January 1, the City of Evanston declared a snow emergency parking ban for January 2 and 3 (8am-6pm) and a snow route parking ban from 11pm January 2 through 6am January 3. Details here.
